According to the NFPA’s Renovations Needs of the U.S. Fire Service report:
- 43 percent of fire departments are more than 40 years old;
- 59 percent of all US fire stations do not have exhaust emission control systems;
- 35 percent of all US fire stations do not have access to backup power;
- A sizable portion of fire stations were likely built without consideration for female firefighters, who make up a growing percentage of the U.S. fire service; and
- The total national cost of station renovation needs is estimated at $70 billion to $100 billion.
We must ensure that the facilities where our fire and EMS personnel sleep, eat, and work are safe and code-compliant.
