The Firefighter Cancer Support Network has been selected to receive the 2026 Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award. Named in honor of the late Senator Paul S Sarbanes of Maryland, the award recognizes fire departments and organizations for outstanding contributions to firefighter health and safety. The award is cosponsored by the Congressional Fire Services Institute and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The award presentations will take place on March 19, 2026, at the 36th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner in Washington, DC.

The Firefighter Cancer Support Network is being honored for its Doing It Right Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program, a comprehensive in-person and online training initiative focused on reducing cancer risk in the fire service. The program defines clear roles and actionable steps for firefighters and leaders to reduce exposure and strengthen long-term occupational health.

CFSI President Jim Estepp and NFFF Board Chair Troy Markel issued a joint statement recognizing the Firefighter Cancer Support Network for their achievements. “The Firefighter Cancer Support Network has been a tireless champion for the health and well-being of firefighters. The Doing It Right Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program reflects the impact of that leadership and commitment.”

CFSI and NFFF recognize VFIS and the UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute for providing corporate support for the award. Their support makes it possible to honor fire service organizations for their contributions to firefighter health and safety with this prestigious award.
