It’s no secret—there is a lot going on in Washington, D.C. with political changes, policy discussions, and evolving priorities. Here are some quick hits to start off the week:
📌 AFG and SAFER Guidance Issued: FEMA recently issued guidance to grantees as they work to align the grants with recent directives. Take a look and reach out to your designated FEMA point of contact with any questions.
📌 Congressional Budget Talks: House Republicans have narrowly passed a budget plan that aims to extend President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, among other initiatives. The Senate, however, has its own priorities.
📌 Government Shutdown Looming: With a March 14 deadline right around the corner, Congress must make some decisions on funding the remainder of fiscal year 2025, including funding for federal fire programs, such as AFG, SAFER, and USFA. With slim Republican majorities in the House and Senate, Republicans will likely need some Democratic support to get the votes required to fund the government. A plan to get enough votes remains unclear, with a few options seemingly on the table.
📌 Memo issued on Agency Staffing Changes: Click here to read more from the Office of Personnel Management and Office of Management and Budget, which issued a memo describing potential changes to agency staffing.
Despite the uncertainties of federal funding, one thing remains unchanged: the fire service must stay engaged to protect the resources and policies that keep our firefighters and communities safe.
